I have a little chihuahua that needs to gain about 2 lbs. What is a good dog food?

Question by Melissa Gaian: I have a little chihuahua that needs to gain about 2 lbs. What is a good dog food?
I just adopted a little 3 year old chihuahua who is 7 lbs. You can see every little bone in his body. The vet recommended that he gain 2 lbs. What is a good dog food to help him. I currently use Natural Balance to feed my other dog, a Jack Russell Terrier. I like it because it is a good natural food so I would like something like that.

Question about the raw dog food, Northwest Naturals?

Question by XOXO: Question about the raw dog food, Northwest Naturals?
My dog is a 13 pound, 2 year old Pomeranian. He is on the frozen Northwest Naturals Dog Food. He seems to like it. He is a picky eater like no one’s business. He actually won’t even eat some kinds of treats. So I’m super, super glad he is eating Northwest Naturals. Is this healthy for him? I read the ingredients; they seem healthful but I want to be sure that it really is healthful.

Q&A: Question about an all natural dry dog food?

Question by Maureen: Question about an all natural dry dog food?
I am looking for better quality food for my dogs.
I found a dog food brand that I can afford and that I like (I choose not to mention the brand name) I just want to make sure that this dog food is as natural as the company says it is. The ingredients are;

Lamb meal, ground rice, cracked pearled barley, millet, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), egg product, rice bran, beet pulp, flaxseed, natural flavor, fish meal, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.
Lambeau, I did try a couple of samples of the Taste of the Wild, it was the buffalo brand, only one dog out of the three ate it, the other two walked away and refused. I do like the ingredients that the Taste of the Wild does have. I do agree that this food has a bit more grain, but my dogs are eating it…. I will keep looking and seeing what their palets want LOL.. thanks

Answer by JFaux ((Lambeau))
I would like to see more meat in the top ingredients…but that food isn’t BAD, but I would not feed it to my dogs just because there are other brands out there that use way more meat and no grains…

Taste of the Wild is way better than this one…it has no grains and uses pure meat ingredients (if I were you though I would avoid buying the Salmon formula).

ADD: Well if they didn’t like the Bison/Venison formula then why don’t you try the Roasted Fowl formula? You could also buy the canned TOTW and mix some of the canned into the dry, which makes it more enticing for them to eat.

The Truth About Housebreaking – Any Dog

Anyone with knowledge about dogs with cancer and type of diet to give?

Question by mybar35: Anyone with knowledge about dogs with cancer and type of diet to give?
My dog has mast cell tumor on back left leg. It’s a stage 2 that hasn’t traveled. The vet did surgery but it was still cancerous cells in the skin that was outside of the tumor area. They recommended radiation which is so expensive for me. Anyway, she is on science diet i/d. I’m looking into a raw diet for her. I’m afraid to do it, she is sick so, I’m afraid if I give her raw meat she will be subseptible to bacteria easily. I want to do what’s best for her. I haven’t discussed this with my vet yet neither have I given her any raw food. When I discussed K9 immunity to my vet, she felt that it wasn’t right for her. However, I hear great reviews about it. I went to a natural pet store today and she said raw food is the best way to go. They have it frozen and its called nature valley. Since my dog had problems with diarrhea before, blood in stool, I’m very worried about switching her to the raw diet. My vet felt like holistic wasn’t the best thing when others differ. I’m so confused. Help

Answer by Bonsylar
You can go holistic without going raw.

Innova EVO is the next best thing to feeding the raw diet. The limited, high quality ingredients are working wonders for all sorts of health problems.

Another holistic food is Artemis. They use human grade, free range meat. All the ingredients are holistic and organic.

Healthwise. It’s from the same company that puts out Innova. I think EVO is marginally better, but this is a good option.

Other good ones: Wellness and Canidae.

There are also supplements you can get.
Vitamins, herbs, and other “boosters” that will increase the dog’s over all health.
Ark Naturals has a whole line of natural, herbal products. www.arknaturals.com
Ask your vet about a vitamin supplement. Pet Tabs is the most popular. They aren’t expensive either.

Good luck.

Question about GO! Natural dog food?

Question by katiekatt: Question about GO! Natural dog food?
My Chihuahua pup eats Nutro Ultra however I am switching him because the pet store in my area is always out of stock, and because I would like him to have a higher quality food. There aren’t many stores in my area that sell quality dog food, however I did find a store that sells GO! Natural. I was wondering if any one else feeds their dog this food and if it is as good as other high quality foods like Innova?…thanks

Thinking about the raw food diet… What else do I need to know?

Question by Vie: Thinking about the raw food diet… What else do I need to know?
After reading about the raw food diet and looking into it more, I think I’m going to talk to my grandparents. So far, I know that you need meat, bones, and organs. I also know that they have to be given to in a certain amount of each. I also know that asking a vet wouldn’t matter, since they don’t study nutrition much in college.

I have two dogs. A 70lbs wolf mix, and a less than 5lbs chihuahua, and I plan on feeding them both the raw food diet. I already know that they eat raw food anyways, because I’ve seen them eating a rabbit, a rat, and a bird that my wolf mix killed. I feed them both Blue Buffalo right now, and I know that that is a good dog food, but I think a more natural diet would be better. I’ve read reviews, and seen that people have seen improvement in their dog’s energy and overall health. I just want to know every piece of information I possibly can, so I can present my grandparents with the facts.

Also, Blue Buffalo is about $ 45 for a large bag. The bags last about, eh, a month and a half, give or take. How much would the raw diet cost us monthly? Basically, the dog food is, like, $ 100 a month.
I just read that online book, and now I am definitely getting my grandparents to get it. I cannot believe how in danger my dogs are. I didn’t even know they could live well into their 20′s! No doubt in my mind: I’m switching to raw food for our dogs.

Answer by Deborah
I do not feed raw, but am considering it and have been doing a LOT of research. I really believe that it is better for the dogs than even high quality kibble. Cost wise, I think it will cost a little less than kibble. There is a really good website I have found that tells you step by step, how to go to a raw diet. It is www.preymodelraw.com. It tells you what kind of food to start out with, how much, and when to add new meats.
