Question by Jason: Do you have cats too? Is store brand cat foods just as bad as the store brand dog foods?
I have a dog, and feed it natural foods, next weeks we are getting a cat from the shelter and am not sure what is good and healthy for her to eat?
Im sorry to ask here, but people are horrible in the cat category. Most answers are “shoot it.” and I need real help.

don’t worry, i am not planning on feeding it to my dogs. my dogs all eat diamond naturals food as recommended by my vet. i am just doing some research for a class project. i am showing the difference in quality of cheap vs good dog food. so back to the question. i know of some pretty cheap(inexpensive) dog foods, but what is actually the cheapest one out there?
the cheapest one i have run across so far is Disney’s Old Yeller brand dog food

well, i raw feed my dogs, but i still like to keep a heads up on the kibble. lately it seems like every big and small company out there are making “natural” dog food kibble. so what do you think is best food?(with understanding that all dogs wont do best on the same food)

Innova, Eagle Pack, Wellness, or Natural Balance. Blue Buffalo is also very good. I personally use Natural Balance.

I don’t know from personal experience with the brand but I found this link that compares several dog food brands they give Natural Planet Organics 4/5. Ive always heard you should not change your dogs food once he gets used to it but that could just be a myth. Im sure changing to that brand would not hurt but you don’t want to change to a different brand each time your done with the last bag. Hope that helps a little.

Diamond is a good food. You really just need to read the ingredients label. You want the first ingredient to be Meat, not meat meal or meat by-products. There should be no corn in the food, and preferably no wheat or soy. Wheat is ok… not the best, but no where near as bad as corn. You want omega-3 fatty acids in there, and possibly some Vitamin E. Those are good for skin and coat.

I was doing some research about what to feed your dog, I’m planning on buying a puppy on a few weeks, I read about the crap that’s put in most generic dog foods (Gross) and I wanted to know what brand would be best for natural healthy ingredients. Origen is the best dog food. But I feed my dogs nutro and sometimes wellness. Where are you getting the puppy?
ADD: I would suggest adopting from a shelter. And there is no such thing as a mini australlian shepherd, there is only one size btw

I have a 3yr. german shepherd and I feed her Canidae because I always thought that it was a very good dog food and that it is very natural and has no fillers. And I heard that it is one of the best brand name dog foods. My dog has also seemed to be doing very good with Canidae. But I am not sure if it would be better to switch my dog to another different dog food.

I would have to say none because none of them have the nutrients a dog should have in it.Try Alpo it’s very good for dogs.

I have been feeding my Maltese puppy Nutro Natural Choice dog food (that is what the breeder was feeding her), but she is not very excited to eat it. After researching the ingredients and reviews on line, I have discovered that it may not be the healthiest food for my dog. What is the best dog food brand out there? I am willing to pay a higher price for premium food for a healthy dog. I need something that my dog will actually like the taste of as well as being nutritious. My vet was suggesting Science Diet, of course because she sells it. Thanks for any advice.

The puppy is almost 4 months old.
Dogs have lived very well and healthy on grocery store kibble for years and years. I know all of mine have. Feed what works for your dog. Many dogs can’t handle the high protein content in premium foods. Not saying they are bad, but something to consider.
Are you giving your dog any tablescraps? If so, don’t do that. You’ll wind up with a picky eater. Just set the dog food out, and if she’s hungry, she’ll eat. Otherwise pick it up and give it to her later. Let her work up an appetite. Don’t treat train her, either. She may be getting full on treats. Use the praise/play method.
Something else to think about..even premium dog foods have been recalled..but no one on here wants to admit that.
