Q&A: Does anyone feed their dog California Natural?

Question by Crissy H: Does anyone feed their dog California Natural?
My 7 month old frenchie/pug has always had a sensitive tummy. When switching to a new food, I always take a good 2 weeks to wean him over. He was on Eukanuba then Science Diet then Royal Canin then Science Diet I/D (intestinal diet – for his constant diarrhea). Any suggestions or comments on the California Natural food?

California Natural is a good one.

Innova EVO is better for sensitive tummies.

Dog food California Natural – Dry or Canned or both?

Question by Anu: Dog food California Natural – Dry or Canned or both?
I have a 4 month old French Bulldog puppy. Currently I am soaking dry California Natural Chicken+Rice puppy food and giving it to him. Does anyone know whether dry or canned food is good? Or can I mix the two and give him? He is 4 months old, how long should he be on puppy food?

Thanks!

dry dog food is alot healthier, they digest it better and dogs can’t hold thier bathroom buisness till 6 months of age and all the can food will create a lot of discomfort for the pup and you , I have had this discussion with my vet efore i have six dogs and volunteer at the spca, just add canned food to dry food once every three days as a treat, it is always appreciated.

Question by Britt: Dog food ADVICE! Wellness, California Natural and Taste of the Wild?
I currently have my 60 pound Pit bull mix on California Natural, his stomachs been getting really red and flakley so my vet recommended a grain-free formula. Does anyone know anything about Wellness or Taste of the Wild. All grain food seems to be wicked expensive. If not those two maybe someone can recommend a different brand of GRAIN-FREE dog food??

Anybody elses dog sick with California Natural dog food?

Question by Shelly B: Anybody elses dog sick with California Natural dog food?
I have 3 dogs…all have gotten diarrhea recently. Contacted my vet. they told me since they are all parvo vaccinated to try to take them off their food for 24-48 hours then gradually add the food back in. In trying to add the food back in, they are getting really loose stools again. After about 48 hrs. of chicken/rice they are starting to firm up a bit. Does anybody else have this issue? (i did switch them to this food gradually, and it’s been about 2-3 months ago that I switched)….I know it’s a good quality food, but is it too rich)? I have a 7 mo. old cocker spaniel, a 1.5 year old pug, and a 11 year old beagle.

YES. My friend Jennine had her three GSDs get sick from that brand. I haven’t heard of any recalls about it though.

    California Natural Dog Food?

Question by Poodles NOT Doodles!: California Natural Dog Food?
I just switched my pup over to adult food today. He was eating Lamb Meal and Rice from Cali Nat. The first ingredient was Lamb Meal and I’ve been told this is a good food and have seen great results. Today, I decided to mix up the flavors a little bit since I was getting a new food and got the Herring and Sweet Potato. However, upon getting home, I looked it up on the dogfoodanalysis website and it was saying that there is no way herring can be the first ingredient because it is so water based. It also said that this food is full of grain and does not have near enough meat. The analysis was 21 crude protein, 11 fat, and 3.7 fiber. It is only ranked as a 4 star food.

When I first got him I had him on Blue Buffalo, but he has constant runs and they would not go away even after months of being on the food. That was when I switched to Cali Nat and he hasn’t had any problems since then. So I feel like I can’t have him on a Super Premium food because it’s too rich for him. Does the herring Cali Nat seem okay? Or should I switch back to the Lamb or Chicken? Or should I just switch foods entirely? I would need a good food that would not be too rich for his stomach.
Also, on a sidenote. I only feed him a cup a day. It says I should feed him more. He is a 50 lb dog. But he looks fine? Should I feed him more just because it says to or should I use my own judgement? He just went to the vet last week and she said he looked the perfect size.

Personally, I’d just feed it to him and see how he reacts to it. You already have it, right?

I found that with several premium foods (including California Naturals), one or another of my dogs developed some problem or another on it. It was kind of weird, because I never had that problem when I was feeding the cheapo foods. However, on all of the premium foods I noticed a definite improvement in their coats. So I think they are worth the money, but some dogs it might take a bit more research to find the right food for them.

    Good luck!

ADD: You should feed him based on his ideal weight. I’ve actually found I generally have to feed more than the dog foods recommend. Use the dog food bag as a general guideline and go from there. Whenever you’re at your vet’s, be sure to ask him to comment on your dog’s weight, whether he thinks he should lose or gain a few more pounds, or if he’s just perfect.

It’s a little more expensive than what I usually buy, and don’t know if my dog would like it. Let me know if anyone has any experience with this flavor. Thanks!
He also had really bad allergies, and I think he needs a non-grain diet. Is rice grain?

    Best answer:

Answer by Proud owner of 6 cats and 2 dogs
I don’t feed it but we do sell it where I work. Not many dogs seem to like it and it can give them very fishy smelling breath and gas. If you’re going to feed California Natural I’d suggest the Lamb & Rice or Chicken & Rice.
