Question for California Natural Dog Food Users?

Question by Anonymous: Question for California Natural Dog Food Users?
I have a nearly 8 month old female GSD, and I was wondering about feeding her. We’ve been using California Natural Puppy Food since we got her at about 12 weeks. My question is on serving size. On the back of the bag, since she was 40 lbs., is 2 and 1/4 cups/day, but we’ve been giving her that much per meal (2 meals per day). She recently hit about 50 lbs., so it should be about 2 and 3/4 cups/day now.

I know the bag says that the serving sizes are approximate and to pay attention if your dog needs more or less, but doubling? I might add that she’s “ideal” in terms of age/weight ratio (at least according to the bag). You can feel her bone structures, though you can’t see them, her waist is defined from above, and when viewed from the side, her waist slopes up from her chest.

Obviously she’s still growing, and I know she’ll bounce back quickly if she gains too much weight, but I was wondering if anyone has had the same experience with the food. : ) Just trying to do everything relatively correctly.

Thanks so much!
To Wonder:

She doesn’t “woo” me into more food, and I am being responsible. You make it sound like I’m a complete idiot. I mentioned that she has healthy proportions for her size in my post, and also called up my vet who says she’s about the right weight. I also know a breeder of GSDs who says she’s a good weight/height for her age. Both agree that she’s progressing normally.

I was more looking for potential advice about how to adjust her diet when she’s older because I don’t know many people who use California Natural. To the future posters, please note these things. Opinions to be considered when her growing slows, please.

Question by sandlapper: Has anyone using California Natural dog food had a problem with the dog having a loose stool?
After learning what is in Iams Low Residue dog food, we decided to change her diet to California Natural chicken and rice. She loves the food, but has had a loose stool ever since we left the Low Residue behind and made the change, with the blessing of our Vet. He is puzzled and so are we. Didn’t think this would/could happen with this natural and wholesome food. Now we don’t know what to do. She has had plenty of time (3 months) to adjust to the change. Anyone have any advice? In helping her make the change, vet. prescribed forti flora and then metronitazole. Nothing is helping to firm her up, but she seems to feel fine. His present method of treatment is to keep her on the California N., with nothing else and hope for things to turn around. This has been going on for way too long. And her stool is like pudding. We’re thinking we need to put her back on the Low Residue no matter what is in it.

Not every food is right for every dog. I would try another natural or holistic brand before going back to the Iams if I were you.

Dog goes to the bathroom all the time on California Natural?

Question by angelzoey2: Dog goes to the bathroom all the time on California Natural?
I just switched my portuguese water dog over from Nutro Max to California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato. On the Nutro Max he was pretty regular – he would go to the bathroom every morning and evening. Now, it seems he goes to the bathroom 4 or 5 times a day. He doesn’t have diarrhea… but he definitely has more stool than before.

Is it normal for dogs to go that much on natural dog foods?
I took a week to ween him over to the new food like you’re supposed to. And after a week, once he was on the California Natural completely, he started going to the bathroom more.

He’s been on it a few days now, so I was going to wait to see if he gets more used to it.

And I am feeding him less than he ate of the Nutro. I follow the guidelines on the bag.

He also has much more gas. Not sure if that’s normal.

No. They should go less. Often, you do not need to feed nearly as much on a good food. Try feeding less.

Q&A: California Natural dog food?

Question by Eilean Ban: California Natural dog food?
I switched both of my dogs to this food a few days ago (Chicken and Rice Formula) because one of my dogs has a sensitive stomach and the other has a list of food allergies almost a half page long. I figured it’s made by Natura, and has a simple list of ingredients so it should be perfect, right? But then I happened to stumble upon the reviews on Rateitall and a good deal of them are not so good, with many reviews saying it made their dog severely ill.

Here’s the reviews: http://www.rateitall.com/i-27939-california-natural.aspx

Has anyone had any problems? Should I be concerned? So far my dogs seem to be doing okay but it’s only been 2 days…

I haven’t had issues with it. A little low in protein for a healthy dog but it’s good for dogs with intolerances.

How do you guys like California Natural for your dogs? My dog (5 year old cocker spaniel) has been on homemade food for a couple months, but she doesn’t have her normal energy with it (she even gets a vitamin each day)…will California Natural (chicken meal and rice low fat) give her more energy possibly?

Answer by Antigone W
I have a 5 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who is currently on California Nautrals also. She loves the food, and I also mix it with Natural Balance brand also. My dog has responded nicely to this because there are no wheat and corn products in these foods. The carbs are coming from potatoes, which I think can be turned into energy easier.

Perhaps your homemade food is lacking in certain nutrients. Remember, it is always better to get nutrients and vitamins from the food source itself and not just from vitamins. Vitamins are supplements only and should not be used as your main source of nutrients.

California Naturals is one of the best foods on the market. Give it a try.

If your dog’s energy level is still too low after altering the diet, then maybe a vet check is in order.

Yes it is a good brand. I found a site called www.rateitall.com where you can read comments from consumers on certain products. Look it up and see what people say about that brand. Good luck.

Question by Sophiesmama: Anyone recommend California Natural Dog Food?
At our natural food store, Californa Natural Chicken Meal & Rice Formula was recommended highly by the sales guy. He gave me 2 sample packets which I have been slowly introducing to my 3 year old Shih-poo and she seems to be liking it so far, but I don’t want to switch totally if it isn’t great for her.

California Natural is a great kibble. Look at the ingredients – you won’t find any “poultry by-product meal” or yellow corn in there.
