What is a good natural dog food for a older large breed dog? Help!?

Question by Emily: What is a good natural dog food for a older large breed dog? Help!?
I just recently adopted a 7 yrs old male German Shepard from the Humane Society. I was planning on keeping him on Science Diet because, that’s what he had been eating for the 3 months he was there and I didn’t want to have any problems that I know can occur from changing his food. I did switch him from Science Diet-Large Breed to Science Diet-Active Longevity because of his age. I am now learning that what I was hearing about Science Diet brand and what I am finding out through research are two totally different things! He is about 15lb underweight right now from being in the shelter and I need to find a good healthy natural dog food to fatten him up a little while still being great for him. Please help!

Give him Blue Buffalo I have done research and I used to give Eukanuba but realized how low quality it is… Please don’t put a thumbs down because you people don’t know what your talking about. Also, Science diet is a low quality brand too.

PLEASE HELP! What is better for a puppy with a sensitive stomach???? ?

Question by Zeffer: PLEASE HELP! What is better for a puppy with a sensitive stomach???? ?
My pup has had chronic loose stool (forming cow pies) to a few spouts of severe diarrhea squirting out.
He does not have worms, giardia and the vet thought it might be a bacterial infection in his stomach and gi track. He was treated for that but a couple of days after the antibiotics which also acts as a stool firmer it started once again. I have tried California Natural and Eagle Pack Holistic with no success. At this point I am ready to make a drastic change. I wanted to try Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance. I am torn between the Duck and Potato and the Sweet Potatoes and Fish formula. Does anyone have any experience with this??? I also thought this brand may be good because he is a basset hound and I know they can be very prone to food allergies. So I thought grain less may be good. I even had him on a digestive supplement that was “fructo oligo sacchrides”. Which is a pre-biotic that helps the gi track absorb nutrients with no success also.
My only concern with these formulas is that they are only about 21% protein and 10% fat which seems low for a puppy. I have read reviews from people who raised their puppies on this food and the dogs grew to be very healthy. So I thought I would give it a shot and just monitor him closely to make sure he is gaining weight and muscle mass. Because I would think with the stool issues and the poop just constantly quickly coming out that he would not be absorbing many nutrients.
What do you think???
At this point I am so frustrated with the problem (not him) that I want to make a DRASTIC change. I will not feed Science Diet Prescription formulas because they are garbage! So please do not even suggest that.
Nor am I interested in feeding a raw diet.
Thank you icon smile PLEASE HELP! What is better for a puppy with a sensitive stomach???? ?
Yeah cat food is HORRIBLE for dogs, thank you!!! The California Natural formula he was on was Chicken and Rice only.
I know the switching of foods is not good, but it can’t go on this way. So in switching the food this time I was thinking I would take it extremely slow. About a week and a half to 2 weeks. Instead of just a week.

Question by RoRo: ENGLISH BULLDOG! TONS OF ?S! What food, harnes or collar, yogurt/cottage cheese in his food? PLZ HELP!!?
Ok so I’ll be getting my baby this weekend. I did tons of research b4 getting him and found what I thought was a great breeder, (had great references & satisfied customers & beautiful healthy looking pups in the past & has been in business for years). Well come to find out they’re feeding (and have been feeding his parents n every1 else) Puppy Chow! I KNOW I KNOW!!! Its crap in a bag, horrible food I KNOW THIS! And I know I should have asked what kind of food they fed them! So I will be changing his food, I know I have to keep on giving him what he’s been eating and gradually change it, however I’ve heard over a weeks time period or 2 weeks? Which one and how so? I was thinking 25% new w/75% old and bump it up by 25% as the days pass till its all his new food? I was also thinking Royal Canin, I heard that they use fillers and it isnt such a great food as its hyped up to be! A pet store employee told my friend that it was great and she uses it for both of her bullies and its the best thing since sliced bread! Also, I’ve heard that pups need 2 get used 2 their collars so start off right away, then I heard bulldogs have to wear a harness cause their neck will get hurt with a collar and bla bla bla, what do guys think/know from experience? And I’ve heard for a healthy and bright coat put an egg every other day and a tablespoon of yogurt or cottage cheese in his food? Idk about that one! Is so, how soon, right away? Since I’m sure his breeder isn’t doing that now? And anyone use vitamins or supplements? I found some that were sooo great according to http://www.champbulldogs.com/care.htm, they also reccomend California Naturals but I’ve heard there are better foods out there and I really want him to have the best he can possibly have. And last thing, what books would you guys recomend? I have read reviews saying that the bulldog for dummies was more of a book for all breeds and only touched a few details on the EBD. I’ve done all my research online and thru the bulldog club I’ve joined, (via email). Oh and one more thing, is it safe for him to go to other houses? Like when I go to a buddys house can he come? Just like on the weekends, and how old does he have to be before he can go for walks and to the dog park?

***QUICK SUMMARY*** 1.) WHAT FOOD/HOW DO I CHANGE IT PORTION WISE?
    2.) HARNES OR COLLAR?
3.)YOGURT/COTTAGE CHEESE IN HIS FOOD OR VITAMINS/SUPPLEMENTS WHERE CAN I BUY & HOW SOON CAN HE START TAKING THEM?
4.)BOOKS HAD SO/SO REVIEWS ON BULLDOGS FOR DUMMIES
5.) CAN HE VISIT OTHER HOMES/HOW OLD B4 WE CAN GO FOR HIS DAILY WALKS/ TO THE DOG PARK? THANKS GUYS!!

I APOLOGIZE FOR THE 8 MILE ESSAY, I TRULY JUST WANT TO BE A GREAT FATHER FOR MY BABY AND WANT AS MUCH ACCURATE INFO FROM EXPERIENCED PEOPLE THAT KNOW! PLEASE KEEP ALL YOUR IGNORANT UNNECESSARY LECTURES/STATEMENTS TO YOURSELF! DONT WASTE MY & YOUR TIME! THANKS AND HAVE A BLESSED DAY!

SO HAPPY you have questions!! female dogs with pups are often fed puppy food. don’t worry about the brand; you know it’s not the best and will change it. if the pup is 8 weeks or so, i would just change the food. at that point, they are still nursing and eating solid food, too. read the ingredients of the new food. you will want a good quality puppy food. make sure a defined meat is the first ingredient. not ‘meat meal’ or such. a harness is best for dogs with short muzzles. they already have breathing difficulties. if you get a good quality food, you don’t need to supplement with vitamins. some dogs are sensitive to dairy. i would wait to take him to the dog park until he has his first rabies shot. pups need to be 3 mos old before they receive this vaccine. consult your vet with questions, too.

    good luck!

How can I help stop vegan dog food?

Question by Deecat: How can I help stop vegan dog food?
I’m hoping some animal experts who have dealt with legal stuff and getting things banned can help me decide how to approach this.

I live in NJ, and I work with dogs. A lot of people are starting to get into this horrible “vegan dog” fad. They’re feeding carnivores low quality grains because of propaganda that couldn’t food an intelligent five year old. Anyway, that’s just some background info so you can see the point of my question.

I’m aware that many states have made it illegal to practice this inhumane treatment of dogs and also cats. Does anyone know who I can contact and how I can make myself (and all of the other people I work with who are disgusted by this) heard and get help making this illegal in my area?

I just want to add that I do not care what vegans do with their own bodies (I call it natural selection if they hurt themselves) but I know (not think) that it is cruel to force animals who have short, acidic stomachs to eat wheat and corn (two major dog allergens) when they weren’t designed to take their nutrition from grains. In other words, if you are a vegan, please don’t waste my time or yours pushing this issue with me. I am relying on information from peer-reviewed scientific data (there is none to support this heinous practice). Thanks everyone who can help!
typo alert: “couldn’t fool an intelligent five year old”. Sorry for any confusion!

I would think that this is something that would concern the ASPCA and the Humane Society. Both promote animal welfare legislation.

Q&A: Dog food help? Switch or stay?

Question by Synthia W: Dog food help? Switch or stay?
I have been feeding my 12 week old cocker spaniel iams, which is what he was weaned with. However, I am thinking about switiching dog foods to a more natural brand.
I have had dogs all of my life and they have all been fed Iams pro puppy when they are puppies and then iams weight control when they got older. All have lived exceptionally healthy and long lives. All of my ckckers have lived at 14+ years.
But, I know that Iams has chicken by prodcut corn fillers and beet puplp among other things and that they also test on animals. But, I can nnot say it is a bad food because all of my dogs have done great on it.
SO, I have been reading about Wellness brand and Nutro. (i need a good food for a good price) Are these foods realy all they are cracked up to be? I have read alot of reviews online and most are negative concerning vomiting loose stools and bad gas.
I am willing to pay the extra price for a better food.
Should i switch or stay with iams?
    Thanks.
Please no rude snarky comments about how hollistic food is the ONLY choice. I read enough of that on here. =)

I feed my dog American Naturals. It’s so cheap ($ 25 for a 50 lb bag!), and good ingredients in them. The only thing is that I have to sprinkle probiotics ($ 5 that’s lasted me 3 months) on them because it’s not included in the food. Although it’s not necessary to use probiotics, it is beneficial for dogs to have in their system. When I first got my puppy, my aunt told me about Wellness, but when I went to my local pet shop, they had said that although it’s a good food, the price has been consistently rising. Anyway, you might have to try a couple different kinds and see what your dog likes the best and what works best for your price range. Good luck!

I feed them fried chicken, pizza, steak with fat, beef jerky, etc.

But I want to stop because they’re getting fat. So if I switch to canned foods like Inova with no by products and meat/bone meals… will they eat it?

Question by seahawkgurl9680: I need to change my dog food and I can’t decide! Can someone please help?
We have a 7 month old, 41 pound mutt. We have always fed him Purina Puppy Chow. He has had really dry and flaky skin as well as rashes lately. So, I have been doing research and in the process have learned how horrible all these major store brands are. So, I have been doing research and reading reviews for better food. I have narrowed it down to Canidae All Life Stages, Solid Gold Hundchen Floken Puppy Food, and Natural Balance. Any experience or knowledge or suggestions would be so helpful. Thank You!

          Canidae dog food??? help!?

Question by Missy: Canidae dog food??? help!?
A few months ago I adopted a dog who was on Natural Balance dry dog food. I kept her on it but up until a few weeks ago she grew tired of it and wasn’t eating it anymore. Someone awhile ago had recommended Canidae. I remebered her dogs coat was so shiny so I decided to try out Canidae this time around. It’s good so far but I was just reading some reviews on it and a lot of people said that the company had changed the formula and their dogs were getting sick! Is this food good or bad? And is there a better food I can use?

          Thanks!
