Question by Madison: Is Purina ONE Natural Blends Chicken and Oat Meal a good dog food?
I know there are better ones like Solid Gold or Canidae, etc but my dogs do fine on Purina ONE Natural Blends Chicken and Oat Meal and they like it. I like it because it’s cheaper and you can find it at Target or Wal-Mart. So is this okay to feed them? They like the taste of it better than Solid Gold or Natural Balance…

It looks like its OK and if you are limited to only a grocery store or petsmart id say go for it but there are MUCH better products out there but it is definitely one of the better commercial brand foods

solid gold and natural balance are much better and they like purina better because of the junk in it if you put it out thye would eat it dogs arent stupid they dont starve themselves

Diamond is a good food. You really just need to read the ingredients label. You want the first ingredient to be Meat, not meat meal or meat by-products. There should be no corn in the food, and preferably no wheat or soy. Wheat is ok… not the best, but no where near as bad as corn. You want omega-3 fatty acids in there, and possibly some Vitamin E. Those are good for skin and coat.

I feed my dogs Wellness and there is no “meal” in its ingredients. I want to feed my dogs the best whole natural dog foods, nothing fake in it.

Lamb meal is lamb by products, so parts of the lamb not fit for human consumption

despite the dog food analysis rating, you really can’t determine which one is good for your dog. I switched my dogs to evo red meat during mid 2007 because of the high 6 star rating and high protein content. My friend did also. All 6 of our dogs had sever diahrea the entire time they were on the food. My vet then recommended eagle pack. A 4star dog food according to dog food analysis because it only has 1 meat as primary ingredient, but if you read their site, you will know why. Despite the lower rating, the results of the food were undeniably better than the high ranking one. However, I still believe evo is a good premium dog food, every dog is different, so to find out which is best for your dog, do some thorough research about a well balanced diet, whether your dog has allergies, how active your dog is to determine is is best. Then select a small bag to slowly ease your dog in to see if there is any adverse effects, if not the purchase a larger bag. Some pet supply stores will even take back open bags of dog food if you are not satisfied.

I am guessing it is only three stars because of only one meat source in the first five ingredients, the repetitive use of rice as a carbohydrate, and a relatively low protein/fat content.
