Dog Food Recipes

If you’re looking for some natural dog food recipes or homemade dog food, this recipe from the Natural Pet Food Cookbook is a great start. Chef Jason Hill of Chef Tips puts Bandit’s Beef Stew to the test, and this dog food recipe was approved with enthusiasm by his family’s Shih Tzu puppy, Sugar. This recipe can be prepared as an organic dog food with the right ingredients. Just choose canned organic vegetables when preparing this meal. It’s also a human grade dog food, as Chef Jason Hill attests — and not bad, either! Using natural organic dog food ingredients, this special treat makes a great alternative to dry dog food such as Nutro Dog Food, Innova Dog Food, Canidae Dog Food and Pedigree Dog Food. It’s a gourmet dog food your pet will enjoy time and time again. Bone Appetit!

DP, I absolutely agree, and there is likely a common connection, too. Some foods that are ultra-premium have some of their ingredients processed thru the mega dog food plants. I am tired of investigators either not doing their job or not discussing the results. OR BOTH. Everything is “safe” until it is “recalled” but the recalled products come from the “safe” shelves, and I am about to go back to raw diet for my dogs.

Yup, and I don’t think it’s the end of it.. Sadly enough. It looks like they are testing them one at a time and posting them as they get to them.. Should have more testing going on to find them all quicker.

Natural Balance has announced that it is recalling it’s Natural Balance Eatables for Dogs due to a supplier’s recall. The affected formulas include 15oz cans of: Irish Stew, Hobo Chili, Chinese Take-Out and Southern Style Dumplin’s with Gravy. The supplier, Castleberry Foods, found one instance of botulism in improperly sealed cans of human food.

The recall information was only sent to subscribers of their newsletters. This information is not yet available on the Natural Balance website.

Does anyone know if pet pride’s natural dog food is on the recall list?

Question by Cherise: Does anyone know if pet pride’s natural dog food is on the recall list?

Answer by cat & jo
Here’s the FDA site that lists recalled dog foods by brand name. The dates and/or codes are listed for batches recalled.

http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/newpetfoodrecalls/#Dog

It looks to me like the last recalls of PetPride were in 2007 and here’s the page that lists the UPC codes of recalled batches as well as the expiration dates of product.

http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/newpetfoodrecalls/brand_list.cfm?Trade_Name=PET%20PRIDE&pet=Dog

Since some stores may not be as ethical as others about removing expired product, or if you have stored some that has not yet expired but may have been on a recall list, this tells you what pet products of PetPride were recalled. If you bookmark the page, you can keep up with recalls and at the main site you can sign up for e-mail alerts specific to animal/veterinary.

is Natural Balance dog food on the recall list.?

Question by Captain Hector Barbossa: is Natural Balance dog food on the recall list.?
Does anyone know what Natural Balance prouds were recalled and if not many is it a good brand of dog food for mixed dogs? Also does anyone give their doggies the Natural Balance dog food rolls? I have been told dogs like them and that Natural Balance is good on them.

there was one type of Natural Balance that was recalled, it was the green pea formula. They had very recently added the rice gluten to it, but it was the only product from Natural Balance on the list.

We feed all three of our dogs natural balance as well as the cat. We have been very very pleased with the Fish formula. We only give the food rolls as treats/used in training, not as an actual meal. When one of the dogs is feeling not so well, we also supplement with the wet food (in cans) but again, that’s only used when they are having upset stomachs.

Again, we have loved the results of the product. We have two dogs that have very very bad food allergies (their skin literally was molting off/rotting off their bodies – it was gross and they stunk so bad!!) but on Natural Balance, all three dogs are fit, have great coats, and never need baths.

We like it!

Eight Sensible Choice Dry Dog Food Products, Seven Kasco Dry Dog And Cat Food Products Recalled Nationwide by Royal Canin USA Effective Today

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — St. Charles, Missouri — May 11, 2007 — Royal Canin USA is announcing today the voluntary nationwide recall of eight Sensible Choice dry dog food products and seven Kasco dry dog and cat food products.

This announcement is based on the company’s ongoing extensive review of its manufacturing and quality assurance testing procedures, which identified trace amounts of a melamine derivative from tainted Chinese rice protein concentrate provided to the company by domestic ingredient supplier Cereal Byproducts, headquartered in Illinois.

“We deeply regret the concern and anxiety this announcement today will cause our loyal customers and the entire pet community,” Olivier Amice, President and CEO of Royal Canin USA, said. “While a very limited number of Sensible Choice and Kasco products in this recall tested positive for trace levels of a melamine derivative, Royal Canin USA is voluntarily withdrawing these products out of an abundance of caution and because we are fully committed to the welfare of our customers’ pets.”

Royal Canin USA has no confirmed cases of melamine related illness in pets eating Sensible Choice and Kasco products affected by this recall. Last month, Royal Canin USA announced it will no longer use any Chinese vegetable protein suppliers.

The following eight Sensible Choice dry dog food products and seven Kasco dry dog and cat food products with date codes between July 28, 2006 to April 30, 2007 are being voluntarily recalled:

SENSIBLE CHOICE® (available in pet specialty stores nationwide)

SENSIBLE CHOICE® Chicken and Rice Adult (Dry Dog Food)
SENSIBLE CHOICE® Chicken and Rice Reduced (Dry Dog Food)
SENSIBLE CHOICE® Lamb and Rice Reduced (Dry Dog Food)
SENSIBLE CHOICE® Chicken and Rice Puppy (Dry Dog Food)
SENSIBLE CHOICE® Chicken and Rice Large Breed Puppy (Dry Dog Food)
SENSIBLE CHOICE® NATURAL BLEND Adult (Dry Dog Food)
SENSIBLE CHOICE® NATURAL BLEND Senior (Dry Dog Food)
SENSIBLE CHOICE® NATURAL BLEND Puppy (Dry Dog Food)
KASCO® (available in pet specialty stores nationwide)

KASCO® Chunks (Dry Dog Food)
KASCO® Hi Energy (Dry Dog Food)
KASCO® Maintenance (Dry Dog Food)
KASCO® Mealettes (Dry Dog Food)
KASCO® Mini Chunks (Dry Dog Food)
KASCO® Puppy (Dry Dog Food)
KASCO® Cat (Dry Cat Food)
Based on today’s announcement, pet owners should stop feeding their pets the eight Sensible Choice dry dog food products, seven Kasco dry dog and dry cat food products listed. Pet owners should consult with a veterinarian if they are concerned about the health of their pet.

The safety and nutritional quality of Royal Canin USA pet food is our company’s top priority because we understand that the health of pets comes first. Pet owners who have questions about the voluntary recall of Sensible Choice and Kasco dry pet food products and other Royal Canin USA products should call 1-800-513-0041 or visit our web site at www.royalcanin.us.

All Sensible Choice and Kasco products have a satisfaction guarantee and the company will refund or replace the diets that are part of this recall announcement.

Has anyone switched to organic/all-natural dog food b/c of the recall?

Question by bamagirl: Has anyone switched to organic/all-natural dog food b/c of the recall?
I have just been worried sick about the pet food recall. It seems like nothing and no brand is safe. After they recalled the jerky treats today (which my miniature dachshund loved!), my husband and I decided we had to do something. Let me first say that my dog, Laci, is finicky with a capital F! I have tried several dry and canned foods and Little Cesar’s is all she will eat. I did alot of research on the Internet today to try to find a good dog food that was made from natural ingredients and was pleased with what I read about Solid Gold. We went to Pet Supplies Plus tonight and bought some Solid Gold “Just a Wee Bit” bison and lamb dry food. You would not believe how fast Laci gobbled it down! She absolutely loves it! I am tickled to death that she will eat this. I definitely recommend it!
