What’s a good dog food for a dog with BAD gas!!?

Question by Nahn ya Biz!: What’s a good dog food for a dog with BAD gas!!?
Peyton is 38lbs and she is very healthy. I feed her Iams wet and dry food twice a day, no table food, and she eats natural treats. With all this, her gas is HORRIBLE! and it’s embarrassing when people come over, because they immediately want to leave. I don’t know what is causing the gas, but I summed it up to the food. I read up on Blue Buffalo, but didn’t read good personal review about them. If someone has other suggestions please let me know. Also, Peyton doesn’t like dry food alone, and it must be mixed with something wet, other than water, like wet food, or plain yogurt(only used a couple times when ran out of wet food) If you have suggestions, please share!

Iams is one of the worst dog foods since it’s main ingredient is corn or some sort of carb, switch to a high protein food or feed your dog a raw diet (http://www.rawmeatybones.com/) also you can buy charcoal tablets to absorb the gas in your dogs stomach.

you should go for a more holistic food… i feed my dogs Nutro.. some people are pushed away because of the contaminated bags a few years ago.. so Verus and Wellness are also good choices expensive but great choices!.. cheeper choice would be Eukenuba but i dont recomend it!

I have had good results with Purina Beneful, the yogurt should help also. Try walking her or some sort of exercise before guests come over. With Beneful, they don’t have as much gas and also don’t go in such great quantities! (I have a Great Dane and yellow lab)

If your dog has gas on a regular basis that means she’s not digesting her food well so yes, it’s time for a change.

This site really helped me make smart choices: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com.

PS. Plain yogurt is really good for your dog : )

Well, the wet food is probably a big contributor to the gas. Blue Buffalo is actually a really good food, but not all foods are good for all dogs. As for your dog not eating dry food, ummm, she has you trained really well. Dogs will not starve themselves, unless they are ill.

My aussie can clear a room with her gas. I switched her to California natural lamb and rice formula, and it has done absolute wonders for her. She still has gas occasionally, but no where near what it was before. It is a very high quality food, and she doesn’t need to eat a ton of it to fulfill her caloric requirements.

I highly suggest it. And you don’t need to mix it with wet food. Just put it down for 20 min in the morning, then pick it up. Put it back down for 20 minutes in the evening, and pick it back up. Trust me, she will learn to eat when the food is down.

ADD: I will edit another post. Innova EVO has way to much protein for a normal house dog. Only dogs that are mushing, herding, schutzhund or other very athletic forms of exercise need that much protein in their diets.

Iams isn’t a very good dog food, because of all the fillers.

Sometimes dogs get gas from canned foods, by the way. You can always soak the dog’s evening meal in water til it’s soft, and that would provide the dog with a change of pace.

I have listed, in sources below, a couple of websites which review dog foods. The better foods are a little more expensive, but not that much more.

The crap Iams is giving him gas and it’s extremely unhealthy for him to boot.

Canned dog food is a little bit better than dry dog food but it’s all made of animal parts and CORN that are “unsuitable for human consumption.” Do you understand what that means? That means that it’s devoid of nutrition and/or carries hormone levels or toxins that are too dangerous for humans. Well food manufacturers don’t want to just throw that stuff out! Heck no! Not when there’s a profit to be made!

So they sell it to dog food companies!

Meat processing plants sell everything that can possibly pass FDA inspection to people food. The absolute worst stuff goes into hot dogs and other canned foods and the putrid leftovers get sold at a low price to DOG FOOD COMPANIES.

Many food processing companies have a secondary dog food plant right in line with their “people food” plant so NOTHING goes to waste. Not even the rotting garbage.

Iams and other major pet food manufacturers use the worst of the worst meats and for fatty acids and oil they buy the used putrid cooking grease that gets dumped into the big dumpsters behind restaurants that they buy in bulk. That is not a joke. That’s what we, as consumers are giving to our beloved babies.

Television ads and marketing has told us for the last 60 years that this stuff is the “only” thing we should feed.

    Horse pucky!

I’m here to tell you that science is finding out that dogs live for 30% longer and have healthier bodies and teeth if they eat a major variety of different things.

There are a few people foods that aren’t good for them but barring that it’s all the way! Don’t EVER let anyone tell you any different.

I feed my dogs “the dreaded table scraps” almost every day. Many times they get RAW chicken and RAW beef. If there’s not enough for them then once in a while it’s a high grade canned dog food and let me tell you my dogs look FANTASTIC. They’re healthy, muscular, have vibrant white teeth, and more often than not they play all day long.

Don’t feed only dry food! It’s crap crap crap crap. The “healthy organic” dry food is crap too don’t buy the hype. It’s CRAP that’s MARKETED as healthy. Beneful is just as bad as OLD ROY.

Science is also finding out that wild dogs are creatures of opportunity and eat more like an omnivore than a pure carnivore. That’s why it’s a great idea to incorporate veggies into your dog’s diet.

Also keep in mind that if you’re a GOOD SHOPPER, you can actually SAVE MONEY buying certain foods and veggies for your dogs instead of crap dog food. Did you hear that? That’s right! I save a few dollars too every week! Worst case is I break even.

AND if you’re feeding healthier – your vet bills will be less!

Just remember – if you’re cooking healthy for yourself – then the scraps you give will be pretty good for Sparky too. If you’re eating McDonalds and so is Sparky then he’s at all the same risks that you are for weight gain and other things – for the most part.

If you’re at the grocery store and you see a great sale on carrots, then GUESS WHAT!? Well that’s what Sparky will be eating tonight! Believe me he doesn’t care! My dogs LOVE carrots anyways!

Switched my dog to Blue Buffalo brand dry and wet food. A lot less gas and a wonderful change in his coat. I highly recommend the Blue Buffalo Brand and Nutro Brand, as well as other holistic brands. Go for a healthy holistic brand of dog food. Petsmart and Petco all now carry the holistic brands.
